Step 1: Strip the Bed
- Remove all bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, and mattress protectors.
- Wash the bedding in hot water with a natural detergent to kill dust mites and germs.
Step 2: Vacuum the Mattress
- Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to thoroughly vacuum the surface of the mattress.
- Pay extra attention to seams, edges, and corners where dust and allergens tend to accumulate.
Step 3: Spot Clean Stains
For fresh stains:
- Blot the stained area with a clean cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible. Do not rub, as this can spread the stain.
- Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle.
- Spray the solution onto the stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Blot the area again with a clean, damp cloth until the stain is gone.
For stubborn stains:
- Make a paste with baking soda and a small amount of water.
- Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Scrub gently with a soft brush, then wipe away the residue with a damp cloth.
Step 4: Deodorize the Mattress
- Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda evenly over the entire surface of the mattress.
- Optional: Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the baking soda for a pleasant scent.
- Let the baking soda sit for at least 1-2 hours (or longer for deep deodorization).
- Vacuum the mattress thoroughly to remove all the baking soda.
Step 5: Disinfect the Mattress
- Fill a spray bottle with equal parts water and white vinegar.
- Add 10-15 drops of tea tree oil or lavender essential oil for added antibacterial and antifungal properties.
- Lightly mist the mattress with the solution. Avoid soaking the mattress, as too much moisture can lead to mold growth.
- Allow the mattress to air dry completely in a well-ventilated area or under direct sunlight, which helps kill bacteria and dust mites.
