Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Prepare the Carpet
- Vacuum the Area: Start by vacuuming the carpet thoroughly to remove loose dirt, pet hair, and debris.
- Spot Test: Before applying the mixture, do a patch test in an inconspicuous area to ensure the solution doesn’t damage or discolor your carpet.
Step 2: Apply Baking Soda
- Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the stained or odorous areas of the carpet.
- Allow the baking soda to sit for 10–15 minutes. This helps absorb odors and loosen embedded dirt.
Step 3: Mix the Cleaning Solution
- In a bowl or spray bottle, combine white vinegar, dish soap, and warm water.
- Add a few drops of essential oil if desired for a fresh scent.
- Stir or shake the mixture gently to combine.
Step 4: Treat the Stains
- Spray the cleaning solution directly onto the stained areas of the carpet.
- Allow it to sit for 5–10 minutes to break down the stain and dirt.
Step 5: Scrub the Carpet
- Using a soft-bristle brush or sponge, gently scrub the stained area in circular motions.
- Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as this may damage the carpet fibers.
