Step 1: Empty the Dishwasher
Remove all dishes, utensils, and racks if possible. Cleaning an empty dishwasher ensures thorough degreasing and prevents residue from resettling on clean dishes.
Step 2: Clean the Filter
Locate the dishwasher filter (usually at the bottom) and remove it. Rinse it under hot water and scrub gently with a brush to remove grease and food particles. Replace the filter once clean.
Step 3: Prepare the Glass
- Fill the glass halfway with white vinegar. Vinegar’s acetic acid cuts through grease, dissolves mineral deposits, and eliminates odors.
- If you want extra cleaning power, add a teaspoon of baking soda to the vinegar. The fizzing reaction helps loosen tough grime.
Step 4: Place the Glass in the Dishwasher
Put the glass filled with vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher. Placing it here ensures the vinegar disperses evenly across the appliance during the cleaning cycle.
Step 5: Run a Hot Water Cycle
Set your dishwasher to its hottest setting and start a normal or heavy-duty wash cycle. The heat enhances the vinegar’s effectiveness, breaking down grease and neutralizing odors.
Step 6: Sprinkle Baking Soda (Optional)
Once the cycle is complete, sprinkle a handful of baking soda along the bottom of the dishwasher. Run a short rinse cycle (without heat) to further deodorize and freshen the appliance.
