Cleaning the rubber seal of your washing machine is essential, especially with increased usage due to a baby. Residue, mold, and odors often accumulate in the rubber gasket, but you can clean it effectively without removing it. Here’s how:

1. Prepare Your Cleaning Solution

Since you’ve tried vinegar and a washing machine cleaner with limited success, consider these stronger alternatives:

  • Baking Soda and White Vinegar Paste: Mix 2 parts baking soda with 1 part vinegar to create a thick paste.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide Solution: Combine 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide with 2 cups of water. This works well for mold.
  • Bleach Solution (for severe mold): Mix 1 part bleach with 10 parts water.

2. Inspect and Remove Loose Debris

  • Open the rubber seal gently and use a paper towel or cloth to remove any visible dirt, hair, or soap scum.
  • Look for mold or mildew hidden within the folds of the gasket.

3. Apply the Cleaning Solution

  • Use a soft cloth or an old toothbrush to apply the cleaning solution into all crevices of the rubber seal.
  • Focus on the areas where grime and mold are most noticeable.
  • If using a bleach solution, wear gloves and ventilate the area.

4. Let It Sit

  • Allow the cleaning solution to sit for 10–15 minutes to break down the buildup. For stubborn mold or mildew, extend this time to 30 minutes.
